Safety Precautions in Sunday School

It goes without saying that parents expect, and have a right to expect, that when they entrust their children to a church group such as Sunday school, that those children will be cared for and protected.

You need to ensure that the environment in which they take part in craft activities is as safe as you can make it. Common sense precautionsinclude having enough adults to help and supervision.

Very young children can be amazingly creative with all sorts of ewuipment and even an innocent paper clip can be a hazard to a three year old if she swallows it or pokes it in her ear, or up her nose.

So do be aware at alltimes of even potentail hazards - a child can injure herself in ten seconds when your back is turned - so always have plenty of help.

1) Always have a first aid kit available

2) Know where fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire exits are

3) Know the names of the registered first aiders

4) Make sure felt-tip pens are washabe and non-toxic and have safety caps

5) Discourage children from putting anything into their mouths, especially if they are walking about

6) Don't allow young children to use sharp scissors but make sure the ones you do provide do the job

7) Never, ever leave under-fives in a room alone

8) Never, take your eyes of children using or playing with water

9) If activities involve water, have a mop handy - slippery floors can be lethal

11) Don't allow older children to use craft knives unsupervised

12) Keep 'adult' equipment such as craft knives, matches, chemicals well out of reach and out of sight
